A telehandler or a telescopic handler is a machinery which is well-known in the construction and agriculture industries. These machinery are similar in function and appearance to a lift truck or a forklift but are really more similar to a crane rather than a forklift. The telehandler provides increased versatility of a single telescopic boom that can extend forwards and upwards from the vehicle. The operator could connect many attachments on the boom's end. Some of the most common attachments comprise: a bucket, a muck grab, pallet forks or a lift table.
A telehandler normally uses pallet forks as their most common attachment to be able to transport loads through locations which are normally not reachable for a conventional forklift. Like for example, telehandlers could transport loads to and from locations which are not usually accessible by regular forklift units. These devices could also remove palletized cargo from inside a trailer and place these loads in high areas, such as on rooftops for example. Telehandler's are unique in that their advantage is also their largest limitation: as the boom raises or extends when the machinery is bearing a load, it also acts as a lever and causes the vehicle to become somewhat unbalanced, despite the rear counterweights. This translates to the lifting capacity decreasing quickly as the working radius increases. The working radius is the distance between the center of the load and the front of the wheels.
For example, a vehicle which has a five thousand lb. capacity with the boom retracted may be able to safely raise just as much as four hundred pounds once it is fully extended with a low boom angle. The same unit with a five thousand pound lift capacity which has the boom retracted might be able to easily support as heavy as 10,000 lb. with the boom raised up to seventy.
The Matbro Company within Horley, Surrey, England initially pioneered telehandlers. These equipment were developed from their articulated cross country forestry forklifts. At first, they had a centrally mounted boom design on the front portion. This positioned the driver's cab on the rear part of the equipment, as in the Teleram 40 model. The rigid chassis design with the cab situated on the side and a rear mounted boom has since become more popular.

Slip sheet attachment: An alternative to the pallet systems is the slip sheet attachment. This hydraulic transport and storing system clamps onto the slip sheet in order to draw it onto a wide and thin metal fork. Useful for shipping abroad and for intra-corporate deliveries.
